Present 1.30 but then flew towards 13 Stone Hill and back 3.00 but moved onto Ogden Reservoir.   Seen by Craig, Craggy and Dave Ousey.  Big thanks to Craggy and Dave for coming and helping me search for it!   Great team work!

It is seen almost exactly a year after I saw my first ever Terns in Rossendale at Holden Wood on June 22 last year.   So far 8 published records in Lancs and North Merseyside and maybe another one last year?.  According to Birds of Lancs and North Merseyside first 4 were at  Leighton Moss until 2005 - these 4 were seen in July and August.  4 were seen after don't know where but last one I believe was last year and possibly prior to that in 2008.?

If any one is interested in latest sightings from Grane when there is that occasional rarity please PM me your number.  I am only sending texts to the people whose numbers I have.  I do not mind sharing my number with other forum regulars.

Tern Not present right now.

Other sightings form Grane over last 2 weeks:-

1.  Cuckoo at Calf Hey 4th June - spoke to someone who says they hear them yearly but none heard yet in 2017.

2.  Single Mediterranean Gulls on 11th June and 19 th June flying  on toOgden over Holden Wood

3.  2 Teal flying over Holden Wood 9th June

4.  4 juvenile Stonechat on 16th June but down to 2

5.  Moorhen with 5 young - 2 families getting together

6.  about 15 Pied Wagtails  last few visits - mainly young

7.  1 Greenfinch over 19th June first for a while

8.  5 fledged Swallows 19th June

9.  6 Grey Herons on H W OOD today

10.  flock of about 24 Lapwing yesterday  , maybe 5 pairs still nesting

11.  fledged family of Crows.

Great bird, great find big lad... the boring visits get rewarded eventually !  Big style this time...

Bird departed low, up and over Ogden dam c4.30ish after being chased all over HWR by 3 B H Gulls which were after stealing a large roach it had caught..

Some pics from this afternoon..

Dave O does not need a house -he is never there! LOL.

Great photographs from both of you. First photo of Craig looks like it is depositing!

A bird was reported at Leighton Moss at 6.30 pm - could our bird have flown there that quickly? Good job it can fly and not have to use the M6. If it was same bird to think it stopped longer at Grane than at Leighton Moss - it could be back! I was right about the Ospreys returning.

I am glad some of you connected at least.

By the way forgot to add 2 other sightings:-

1. Female pheasant with some young at Holden Wood
2. juvenile Black-headed Gull which was present since yesterday - first of class of 2017 recorded here by me.

The mud must be a great sitting place for birds- what else could turn up? Some of the best Rossendale birds have turned up form late June to early August - who says late June and July are quiet times?

What else might be found in Rossendale after yesterday? Persistence by Sarfraz has again paid off, pity more of the group didn't manage to see the tern. Your "Tern" will come!!

Made a couple of trips to Holden Wood but normal service has been resumed.

Other titbits form the last 2 weeks:-

1. first Mallards that I going into eclipse plumage on 9th June
2. Common Whitethroat singing by dam wall 15th June
3. 6 Oystercatcher reported 20/06/17
4. 3 Curlew - 2 on hillside above Hutch Bank and 1 calling from Musbury way

last couple of days:-

1. 4 Stonechat immatures feeding in field 23/06/17
2. approx. 20 Pied Wagtails today
3. min 3 Common Sandpiper around res
4. 3 Curlew today - 2 coming form Hutch Bank side and flying low above the res whilst another called from Musbury
5. min 24 Jackdaws in a flock

Here is a list of records of Caspian Tern from Lancashire:-

1. Leighton Moss 25/07/1966
2. Leighton Moss 02/08/1973
3. Leighton Moss 13/08/1979
4. Eric Morecambe Complex 16/07/2005
5. Knott End 02/07/2007
6. Formby Point 04/08/2008

A Caspian Tern was reported along the Fylde/Lancaster area coast line last year but not submitted so dos not get included. I can understand why so many people from ELOC turned up to see Casper Carrot Face - first submitted record for 9 years. Our bird was not only the earliest but the furthest inland in this county.

Alongside the Bluethroat in a Bacup Primary School in 1995, Marsh Warbler at Folly Tip and Stone Curlew on Haslingden Moor 100 plus years ago - it becomes one of our crazy records. None of these birds have been recorded that far form the coast but then they have turned up in Rossendale!

A Caspian Tern seen in South Wales over the last 2 days - could it be the Grane bird touring?

For those of you who want to see the birdguides review of the week with a mention to a place in Rossendale please click:-

www.birdguides.com/webzine/article.asp

Got a phone call from Craggy about a Sedge Warbler at Calf Hey today - showing and singing just under hill side in rushes - that metal square gate area.

Whilst listening to the Sedge Warbler heard a Tree Pipit sing too. It appeared to be changing location around the hill side and felled plantation near woods.

4 juvenile Stonechat still at top end of Holden Wood and a family party in felled plantation at Calf Hey.

Quite a few birds singing - Wren, Willow Warbler, Blackcap, Song Thrush, Reed Bunting, Chaffinch, Meadow Pipit

Snipe was showing very well on mud at Holden Wood on Friday.

Pair of Grebes been present on Holden Wood since Friday 23rd and a pair on Calf Hey.

Well deserved bird for your persistence. Apparently the bird relocated after it had seen that you had cake in the other hand from Leighton Moss!

I was at Southern Tip of country at the time....even I might even have visited for that bruiser of a tern.
