Just to let you know a fishing match on so probably very busy from 8.30am to 6pm on Sunday 30 July.

 

Made a few visits around but nothing of not:-

 

Musbury on 20th of July:-

 

Hoping for a Juvenile Cuckoo but not even a Skylark

Meadow Pipits galore

Stonechat 6 -  1 solo male, a pair with 4 young

Kestrels - 3

 

HWR and heap Clough, Jamestones on 28th:-

Redshank was also seen on 27th but not on my visit - same bird been resident since early May?

46 Lapwings - 1 very full grown young in the field with big dip in,  at least 4 immatures sighted

 min5 Reed Buntings - some juveniles

2 Linnet

1 Grey Wagtail

lots of juvenile Meadow Pipits seen over last 2 weeks

at least 2-3 pairs Sand Martins nesting in that exposed bank - one hole looks much bigger than it was -has something tried to get in?

min 10 mallard

3 Great Crested Grebe seen on Ogden

2 Green Woodpecker

approx. 40 Starling feeding in new growth of now exposed shoreline

 

Heap Clough and Jamestones:-

 

4 Green Woodpecker

2 Common Sandpiper

3 Wheatear - at least 2 are juvenile mals

6 Stonechat - 4 young

4 Linnet

2 Buzzards - incl 1 juvenile

3 Kestrel

min 40 starling

min 60 Goldfinch many young in there too

Easterly winds today and tomorrow!!!!


Visited yesterday and today morning:_

3 Moorhens - 2 adults and 1 chick
fish skeleton on floor of path - possible Osprey been around?
2 Green woodpecker

33 Lapwing - a few juvs
3 Oystercatcher came from Quarries
0 other waders - big clear out last week
about 10 starling
3 Buzzards
8 Reed Buntings -1/2 family parties
min 10 Meadow Pipits
3 Pied Wagtails
1 Grey Wagtail
approx. 8 Black-headed Gulls
2 linnet
approx. 10 Goldfinch
6 Willow Warbler - most young ones

a mixed flock of 2 Treecreeper, 1 Great Tit, 3 Blue tit, 1 Dunnock, 3 Chiffchaff
11 mallard
min 12 Cormorants
2 Wren

09/08/17 - 26 Mallard and minimum of 86 Lapwing at HWR

10/08/17 - rather exciting 3 Tree Pipit of which 2 flew to Musbury from dam wall area and 1 past boardwalk ....All 3 fizzing/spizzing
and 2 Common Sandpiper , 1 Great Black-backed Juvenile as well

11/08/17   - 12 Blue tits in a flock, followed by a Willow Warbler

Have made regular visits to Holden Wood since the 10th but the highlights are:-


1. 63 Mallard on Thursday 17th August and 45 min today 20/08/17
2. Whitethroat on Thursday 17 August in scrub by dam wall - probable migrant, there was an adult singing here in May/June
3. 2 Oystercatcher Friday 18 August
4. Big tit flock 20/08/17 - min 6 Coal Tits in there also Long Tailed, Blue and Great.
5. Willow Warblers subsinging last week 9/10 August

Should be an Osprey knocking about by now on autumn passage but either nothing or it has evaded people.


214 Black-headed Gulls landing on and around Holden Wood Reservoir between 6-7.15pm today. 172 together in area at same time.

3 Sand Martins.

approx. 5 Swallows

1 Chaffinch

1 Greenfinch

Bullfinch active last week in hedge

Holden Wood:-

 

3 Kestrels towards Hutch Bank

8 Meadow Pipits on the move towards Musbury

0 Waders and Warblers seen

approx. 20 Black-headed Gulls

4 Bullfinch

5 Linnet - incl 3 juvenils

2 Stonechat - female and and immature

4 Reed Bunting

min 40 Goldfinch

min 50 Swallows

min 4 House Martins - only present on way back

12 Meadow Pipits

Quite a sight Meadow Pipits Goldfinch Swallows and later on House Martins in air together

1 Grey Wagtail

2 Pied Wagtails

2 Siskin

1 Moorhen

tit flock consisting Coal Tit, Goldcrest, Long Tailed Tit, Blue Tit

1 Robin - Pale Robin - been present a while

1 Sparrowhawk

2 Wren

1 Grey Heron

1 Stock Dove feeding on reservoir shoreline

min 10 jackdaws

Carrion Crows, Mallards, Woodpigeons, Magpis present but none in surprising numbers. 

1 Buzzard

 

Ogden:-

3 Great Crested Grebes

1 Great Black Backed Gull

1 immature Lesser Black Backed Gull

approx. 102 Lapwing on the bank

approx. 10 Black-headed Gulls

1 Grey Heron

 

Calf Hey:-

2 Grey Wagtails

2 Wren

1 Blackbird

1 Kestrel

 1 Jay

 2 sand martins

in 30 swallows

 

Heap Clough/Jamestones area:-

1 Green Woodpecker

1 Great Spotted Woodpecker

2 Greenfinch

1 female Whinchat - around dip near Deep Clough

6 Wheatear - mix of adult females, juvenile males and possibly juvenile females 

Tufted Duck female with 3 ducklings on Jamestones 2 - good breeding record! 

4-5 Stock Dove

min 20 Goldfinch

mix tit flock

1-2 Buzzards

2-3 Kestrels

1 Grey Wagtail

1 Bullfinch min

2 Trips to Grane this week:-


Holden Wood on 9/10/17 - highlight a sole Redwing near dam wall at Holden Wood.


13/10/17

Holden Wood:-

1 Stonechat

4 Mallard

3 Tit species having a look at me as I was hiding under a tree from the heavy showers! Long Tailed, Great, Blue ....


Ogden:-

4 Great Black Backed Gull - 1 adult, 3 immatures

1 male Stonechat

Redwings not seen but heard



Calf Hey :-

8 Mallard

Grane Thursday 19 Oct

Nothing exciting or special around the reservoirs. Highlights:-

3 Swallows over Holden Wood which should be a highlight itself..moving south/south east
2-3 Song thrush
5-6 Blackbird


min 70 Lapwing over and at Ogden
3 Stonechat

max 30 Mallards and 1 Goosander flying west

1 Great Black backed Gull


Heap Clough Jamestones:-


min 70 Redwings in plantation around Clough Head but move towards Heap Clough
4-5 Song Thrush
min 10 Blackbird

 6 Field fare + 1 Song Thrush

12 Chaffinch

1 Green woodpecker at jamestones

22nd October -  24 minimum Cormorants into roost at Holden Wood Reservoir.   Gulls coming down to the res - min 20 Common Gulls over, min 20 Herring Gulls, about 6 Lesser Black backed Gull.....1 Gull appeared to have some of the traits of a Ring Billed Gull but no photo taken and only ever seen 1 of this species ever.

 

 

23rd October - A walk around the reservoirs and Jamestone's  produced a full house of regular thrushes - Mistle Thrush at Quarries and top end of Ogden, 2 Ring Ouzel at top end of Ogden, approx. 20 Fieldfare at Quarries, min 30 Blackbirds around - 15 at heap Clough,  min 10 Song Thrush - min 6 at Heap Clough,  min 100 Redwings 

 

30 October - a walk around with Andy Young

2 Teal at Holden Wood

2 Goldeneye at Jamestone's

min 350 Fieldfare - possibly 2 groups of 150 to 200 heading west

lots of Robins

min 50 Redwings

as reported by Kevin lots of large Gulls unusually at Calf Hey - min 10 Great Black Backed Gulls, 5-6 Lesser Black, just over 10 Herring.......

 

03 - 11 -17

min 10 House Sparrows opposite Holden Arms

1 Dunnock in scrub

min 15 Wrens around reservoirs and quarries

min 20 Robins around reservoirs and quarries opposite

flock of 8 birds flying west - possible Hawfinch but no calls and to be honest

approx. 15 Fieldfare at Jamestone

20 Redwing at heap Clough

min 5 Kestrels - singles at Holden Wood, Calf Hey, Jamestone - 2 over 13  Stone Hill

7 Bullfinch flying over slope at Calf Hey settling on heather.

Had a few trips around Grane over the last 2 weeks but nothing exciting seen. 

 

26 Mallard seen at Holden Wood on 16/11/17

11 teal seen - 5 females at holden Wood and 6 on Calf hey - 3 pairs......16/11/17

3 Common Gull seen on 15/11/17 at Calf Hey and 3 over Holden Wood on 16/11/17

78 Black-headed Gulls at Calf Hey 15/11/17

Nothing really unusual or outstanding seen - in fact been a bit quite for smaller birds in general - except on 16/11/17  - when 2 Song Trush, min 4 Blackbird, min 20 redwing, quite a few Coal Tit, Long tailed, Blue and Great tits, Chaffinches, Goldcrest, Goldfinch in little copse at top end of Holden Wood

 

Buzzard with green and blue wing tags seen above heap Clough - a breeder here or winter visitor?  Green wing tagged buzzard was seen in March by Craggy

min 100 Black-headed Gulls at one point with some flying over

26 Mallard

approx. 150 herring Gulls flying towards Fishmoor - approx 50 Herring Gulls on reservoir at one point when I arrived

1 Common Gull

5 Great Black Backed Gulls

1 Kestrel

2 Moorhen

 

Ogden:-

 

1 Golden eye

2 Goosander

tight flock of Herring Gulls on Ogden too

1 Reed Bunting

 

Calf Hey:-

 

1 Kestrel

1 Buzzard

6 Bullfinch - 4 flying, min 2 still calling from heather/scrub

 

Musbury Heights:-

just a few Wrens

windier up here

 

Holden Wood today:-

 

70-80 Black-headed Gulls

2 Teal

36 Mallard min

8 Lesser Blacked Backed Gulls over flying to Fishmoor

1 Grey Heron

2 Wrens

1 Redpoll over

 

Quarries:-

2 Stock Dove

20 redwings

5 Blackbirds

3 Mistle Thrush

50 Fieldfare

2 male Kestrels fighting on ground - had to break them up

8 Meadow Pipits over Heap Clough Car Park

2 Mistle Thrush at gate of Ogden

1 Grey Wagtail

made some visits over December nothing major to note


December 25:-

9 redpoll around Holden Wood
7 Goldeneye - 1 drake and 4 females on Ogden, 1 male and female at Jamestones.


December 29:-

min 10 Blackbirds at Holden Wood in field
approx. 50 Fieldfare in Heap Clough
min 20 redwing around Holden Wood
