Late evening wander produced a strange sighting of over 20 Mistle thrush feeding on tops of Cown res. I also noted a Great Spotted Woodpecker feeding off a wall and floor. It seems a mass hatching of flying ants have drawn the crowds as masses of the critters were all over tonight. the floor was moving at times. I presume they make good food.

Hi Ste,

We had the Black garden ant [lasius niger] today as well, it hapens one day a year usually around now apparently controled by humidity and length of day, everwhere along the river were swarms of them, the only bird i saw eating them were Great tits.

Would you normally expect to see more Grey heron, there is a distinct shortage of them on the river this year.

Hi Brian

Grey Heron around res has most certainly diminished over last 5 years I would say. This may be due to increased use of the water and surrounding area that is now occurring.

Mind you I never have much luck with Reed Bunting around Cowm yet others say different.....maybe need to clean my binocular lenses!
