The R.O.C winter birdrace took place today with eight participents making up three teams. We started at 08:00 and finished at 15:00 and the results were as follows:
Team A = 43 birds.
Team B = 50 birds.
Team C = 52 birds.
Altogether we saw 59 different species the highlights of which were male Hen Harrier (untagged) on Haslingden Moor, 1 female Crossbill in The Grane Valley, c60 Lapwing at Holden Wood Res, Kingfisher on Wallbank Lodge, Stonechat pair at Holden Wood Res and flocks of c25 and c40 Siskin at Grane and Helmshore.
The Harrier and Crossbill were new birds to the winter list total which now stands at 85 species since birdraces began in 1991.
Once again there is an inference that I'm some sort of miserable sod, and need cheering up, I don't know where you get this from - well, I'm not biting. Ill just go to the pub with the rest of the grumpy old men and bemoan the state of the nation. And when I come home pissed all we be well the world !
No I didn't see them but two good birds anyway
Happy Bob
P.S. this missive is not alcoholically enhanced. (not yet anyway)
hi jim - when you say north of grane do you mean north as in following grane road down pas the reservoirs, and then you drive past clough head and the moors aafter - is that haslingden moor?
No, it is due noth of Grane. In other words, if you drive towards Blackburn from Haslingden along Grane Road, Haslingden moor is behind the hills to your right. You can get to it via Clough Head - just head uphill.
