I know we can't easily compare years as we didn't have this forum last year, but there seem to be quite a few mentions of Brown Hare this spring.  Do you think there are more of them about this year?

Hi Jim, no not really I probably manage about a dozen or so sightings a year though mainly during spring and early summer. Its all relative really depending on how much time you spend in the right habitat.
Talking of habitat there has been a large area of the Plunge valley planted out with small deciduous whips. The ground on the N. side is most affected with an extension up to and beyond Sand Beds lane as far over as Brow Edge Quarry and parts of Whinberry Naze. It would appear that landowners are being given grants to plant out unprofitable land. As such it may be that in time we will see a reduction in Brown Hare numbers along with several open country bird species such as Grey Partridge,Skylark, Meadow Pipit, Wheatear and the like. My opinion is that in the future, as this habitat matures it provides cover for crows foxes and squirrels all of which as we know are all too prevalent as it is.
Bob.
