im not registered on the rochdale sight so will leave it here. at 1.30 pm around bamford chapel, i noticed a hawk circling, i looked closer and noticed it was bigger than a ususal sparrow hawk and within a minute it was joined by a magpie and then another magpie. they mobbed it rather clumsily in fact and the hawk did not respond even though it was bigger than the magpies.
the first thing i noticed was how much bigger the hawks wings were as compared to the magpie and how much bigger its body looked and it was longer from tip to tail than the magpie too. they were around for a few minutes too giving me good views from below. only once thought they were of the same size but 99% of the time the hawk was bigger. surely a goshawk which it seemed to he from colouring and size, would have taken 1 of them magpie or dont they soar when hungry?
at 3.30 i noticed 2 more birds of prey soaring what quite far in the distance and probably in the direction of heywood? . they could have been quite far off. one appeaered smaller and tha disappeared. the larger one had a slow flight and in flew in circles - im guessing it was a buzzard but it was very far and qite high.
