Led a walk of a dozen of the Rochdale field Naturalist society members around Haslingden Grane today sat 27-10. Great walk with the highlight being 14 crossbills feeding in the tops of trees mainly favouring larches. Easy to pick out red males feeding away then the whole party would move on calling. Then reappear again so they seem to be staying around. With this murky weather they likely will. For those who might be looking for them, they were centered around the south west corner of plantation of Calf Hey res. A stream runs down to the res with a bridge over. For those with the united utilities leaflet there is a picnic table sign on the map! They were there when we got there about 12.30 and still there after 30 mins but moving about the small area.
