Plunge valley - Cowpe Moss - 15:20 - 18:30hrs
2 m. Wheatears on the N. side of the valley with a flock of 4 Skylarks a short way further on.
2 Meadow Pipits were in Cragg Quarry and a pr. of Golden Plover were on Cowpe Moss with a further single bird calling above Foe Edge.
A single Curlew called from Newhall Close on return.
All in all a very quiet afternoon with no lark or pipit song and only the one Curlew heard despite covering a sizeable are of suitable habitat.

Reedsholme - 18/3/08
1 Nuthatch this morning at feeder and Green Woodpecker calling over the past week or so.

What do your Nuthatch feed on Bob? They've been seen fairly close to us and i'd like to try to attract them if possible.

Good to see the Wheatear records from you and Brian K (at AMR I think) by the way.

Jim

Hi, Jim the Nuthatch doesn't get anything special just the ususal nuts and black sunflower seed.  I will say this though, their visitations (good choice of word eh!) are sparodic.  I know very well that they are constantly in the area but for some reason they aren't a regular visitor. In fact I think I've only seen it about 4 times all winter. So really its just a case of enough grub, pull the chair up to the window and keeping watch. Should be right up your street!
Bob.
P.S. any Wheatears on Winter Hill yet?

Jim/Bob,
I have regular nuthatch at two feeding stations, there first choice is allways peanuts,i have experimented with feeders and have found a open flat suspended shallow tray is preferred, they usually take a nut away, wedge in a favourite branch to eat.
