Wildfowl Count 16 / 17 August

Once again the WeBS time table and that of my job at Bolton Library are exactly 180 degrees out - I'm working next weekend again.

If anyone is in the Grane area next Sat or Sun could they please post any sightings here - particularly waterfowl and waders?

Grane, 17th August 2008.08:00-10:00
Not many wildfowl or waders but the following were seen:
Grey Heron, 1 hunting the long grass at top end of Ogden,
Canada Goose, 22 in fields near Duke of Wellington above Holden Wood,
Mallard, 14 on or around Holden Wood,
Kestrel, 3 in the air together + a few singles!
Lapwing, 13 at Holden Wood,
L.B.B.Gull, 1 west,
B.H.Gull, 1 on Calf Hey,
Green Woodpecker, 1 juv at bottom of Heap Clough,
G.S.Woodpecker, 3/4 calling,
Swallow, c70 with many juvs,
House Martin, 6,
Pied Wagtail c5,
Grey Wagtail, 1 at Holden Wood,
Goldcrest, c20 in total,
Willow Warbler, c4 calling, 1 singing, 1 having a "go" at a Goldfinch!
Tits, all in good numbers,
Raven, 1 flew west up the valley,
Goldfinch, c60 inc charm of 34,
Linnet, 3.

Hi Dave/ Jim

I was up at Grane this afternoon and saw quite a bit of the stuff Dave saw, but I can add the following.

Holden Wood
1 cormorant, 2 ravens over, 20 house martins, 8 mistle thrush, 1 mixed flock of linnets & goldfinch, roughly 20 of each & 6 reed buntings.   

Calf Hey   family party of stonechats, 1 treecreeper & 1 nuthatch.

Clough Head    1pr stock doves, 1 jay, mied flock containg min 20 long tailed tits, 5 willow warbler, 2 goldcrest, 2 coal tit, 2 blue tit 2 great tit.

Heap Clough   family of 7 stonechats.
