Despite the heavy rain, birds seen:- 40 BH Gull,3 Common Gull,36 Mallard,2 Jays, 2 Magpies,1 Kingfisher,1 Chaffinch. No sign of "resident" Cormorant.
Kingfisher again seen in heavy rain with no disturbance from dogwalkers(except me) Has anyone any thoughts on there having been an increase in the number of Jays seen?
Regards,
David Ousey.

I am coming up to my third winter in strongstry of recording bird sightings and have a definate increase in jay numbers, at least three pair have bred and there young are doing well, they are taking nuts off feeding tables more readily than the last couple of years

Hi David, Not sure what it is about the Jays.   But we on vismig are seeing many Jays moving around at this time of year and see them in places where they would never be seen... Last year I had about 20 during the autum vismig count at Haslingden Laund and they where purely passing through.  This is being recorded throughout the Country, but not sure yet as to whether they are from outside of the UK, or just some sort of internal UK movement which you do get with other corvids especially Jackdaws....

Thanks for the info. They must be migrants because we dont see them any of the other months.I have been seeing up to 3 birds max nearly every time I go around Cowm Res area, lately. There are a few down Healey Dell though, could be an expansion from them?
Regards,
Dave Ousey.
