A email I sent to Mavis, yesterday in reply to her email below. Since penning this mail the roost is probably increased even further to around the 9000 birds by this morning - had one party this morning of 8000 approx..) just thought you might be interested... and thanks for keep checking out this ex pat... appreciated...)
Hi Mavis,
I am beginning to wonder whether all or most of these continental birds coming West through Yorkshire and Lancashire are joining roost sites all across the Fylde and Morecambe Bay. Within the past 5 days a new roost has set up West to me (possibly Pine Lakes area or Leighton area) and I am now getting these coming East at about 0810 onwards each morning with some going back at 1710 in the evening. Note squadrons of Starlings do go East from here all morning, long after the roost has cleared. (similar to them going W where you are)
I know these I am getting are continental birds but the onward movement goes on here East everyday so I cant say whether they are moving on or not, I would have thought so! but who can be sure. What I do know is that this roost was not there a week ago and it is growing phenominal each day at the moment (eg: by 2000 this morning compared to previous day).
I estimated this morning it had grown to over 4000 birds (probably very much underestimated) also just noticed on the Lancaster site that a party of approx 6000 went West past Jubilee Tower this afternoon - I am wondering if they are the same as I get.
Most of the continentals coming through must stop off on the West Coast to get the massive roost we get..
Glad to hear your OK, do you ever hear from Alan - hope he is OK, hes usually going to Spurn for the Blackbirds, about this time of year.
Meant to ask anyone to the west of me if they pick up my starlings; they always move west and I never see them coming back in the opposite direction. I`ve often wondered if they join the massive roost on the Fylde coast
