I have just returned from Hutton Roof (1015hrs-1055hrs) and have been watching the Great Grey Shrike on Ploverlands, and it was seen to take insect food in mid flight with similarities to flycatchers. Last seen and still there on leaving: Go to Trig Point and stand looking SSE and at about 200 yards there is a small rocky outcrop (the only outcrop at this point), with 3 Hawthorn Trees growing above. It was at the largest Hawthorn on the right hand side. Also Willow Tits on Hutton Crags (topside of limestone pavement). Also Meadow Pipits and Chaffinch on the move... several went overhead.
You mention about it being a passing bird on migration rather than a sedentary overwintering. You are probably right and I can only add to this. Like you I saw the/ or a bird in November, and have been up several times since looking for the bird, without any result until today.
Last night there must have been quite a large Curlew movement, on 3 separate occasions I had to go outside at both Carnforth and Burton and on each occasion I was getting audible calls..
Great Grey Shrike still on Hutton Roof, checked out each week day more or less since it arrived. It is usually within a 400 yard square, sat on top of a hawthorn bush.
Also at the Quarry Car Park, Dalton Side there have been Hawfinches seen in the past few days (sadly i havnt seen them yet).
I am told that the best place for Hawfinch is Sizergh Castle which is just further on than Levens Bridge (just North of Milnthorpe). They reckon best seen between 8-10am on the car park where they are coming down for grit. Later in the morning is not so good because there is lots of people around putting them off.
They were present this morning.
