Hi Brian, Thanks for your kind comments which are very much appreciated. I am already planning to do Spring this next year from Hunting Hill Nr. Carnforth, a great spot Ive found especially for the Chaffinch and Meadow Pipits.
With regards the Starlings, I have been over the past few nights and they are now doing very well, would estimate 30-40 thousand and slightly still growing.
Yesterday they started coming in at about 3.45hrs and its over by about 4.10pm, this will alter slightly each day.
I only use two viewpoints and its always a gamble which to use on any particular night, because if you get it wrong its too late to travel to the next. Just as you approach Leighton Moss on the main road, you go past the far entrance and then it opens out and you can see the meres on your left, this is also a good watchpoint for the egrets which come to this part to roost each evening. Now this is my favourite place, because if they are going to come down here (North side of the causeway) you can be in for a treat and sometimes they weave in and out above your head crossing the road and back and enable good photography.
My 2nd best vantage point is simply from the new footpath which runs parallel with the main approach road which leads to the RSPB Shop/Cafe. If you walk down about 50 yards just lower down from the entrance to the causeway (which leads to the Public Hide) and walk towards the RSPB Shop/Cafe, you should see the new footpath. Here they have put two splended benches to sit on.
Any of these will be good. So please have a great day whenever you decide to come.
Thanks so much much for the continued reports. The sketches have given a great feel of the place and add a little atmosphere. Really though you should work on the sheep!!
Is is me or can you feel the heat from some distant sun coming on?
Thanks

Forgot to mention earlier Brian, try and pick a clear dry night if possible, because its hard enough before dusk anyway and also it gives more chance of them doing some swirling etc.
Ian, yes your right they've had hundreds of Waxwing up here, in fact almost everywhere where there has been some rowan. I see you have also had them in Rossendale, but on the doorstep here its been eg: 50 at Milnthorpe on the main road, in fact a party of 12 in Vicarage Close which is about 100 yards from where I live, but sadly for me none!! I could actually jump in the car and find some within about 20 minutes, buts thats not really for me... If they come my way I will be grateful, but otherwise.... I will try and make the AGM, I would love to come along to a meeting soon. By the way thanks for sending the Bird Report much appreciated (please alter records to new address when possible: new address is: 9 Glebe Close, Burton In Kendal, LA6 1PL and new phone number: 01524 782792 and mobile still the same - its OK I got the other with re direction without problem.. thanks - must remember to send you my subs this week also - and thanks for doing a great job for the Club).
Hi Ste, I was talking with Jack Holden only last week when they came up, and he keeps me in the loop.. (you see I got my beady eyes on you....) Yes the sheep are my best contribution!! and get better each time (certainly different!!), a little better than the horsey/camelsy!!!! but I will keep practicing... Yes your right that distant sun is coming through and it wont be long now.... when are you going down there?
Regards to all, love reading all your reports. And for me the best to press this year....... a possible return of the Cuckoo to Grane...
