Also: Must have been another Mipit Push yesterday. JR at Caton had 2000, Ian at Rossall had 8000+, Walney had another 2000+, Mavis at Darwen at 2000....
Hi Bryan, Pipits were decent here yesterday aswell. 100`S over but really hard to count when netting!! Good to start today until 8am then slowed to trickle. Packed nets up then noticed when loading van 3 large parties over in quick succession. May have been starting again as we heard more over house. Heard 2+ Redwing over also.
Glad your getting out and your place there is probably the best place around for the Mipits. Things have changed a lot over here, its been superb during the high pressure last week, but yesterday was a rain off and today a blowing day.
Glad you got some Redwing, I have had two parties this morning going NW. Forgot just how good they are at following the contours with the arc... probably see a lot of that during the next week or two.
I will probably go up to near the Trig on HR during the late afternoons because Redwing love it there and will often roost up there. Have you heard that weird contact call they make at the roost, its totally different to any of the normal "seeip" contact calls. I am sure you will know the call I mean, but just in case go to this site http://www.xeno-canto.org/browse.php?query=redwing and scan thro the reds calls by clicking over the "little television" picture. Well when they are up their roosting (from 3pm) they make that call all over the place, freaked me out at first until John Wilson clued me up with it.
If you get any quantity (push) coming through Craig, will you let me know, cos I think you will probably get them first, if they come through on their normal NW, but sometimes I have known them to come in from the North and follow the M6 corridor.
Should be good over the next four weeks. catch up soon. best to dad and mum
Hi Bryan, Familiar with the xeno website, great for downloading songs etc for mp3 player/lure. Redwing roost call sometimes like redstart calls (whee-tick) but dont hear it much as i dont know of any decent roost sites here.
Good yesterday morning again(sun 2nd) with lots of pipit coming even in rain but tailed of to a trickle 10ish. Nearly impossible to watch and net at same time, took Dad with me watching but he too was looking at nets not the sky!!
Noticed when we were getting in the van 2-3 large parties coming over 10.30-10.45ish and had some over house later. may have started coming again.
R Bunts also in with pipits. We missed loads of stuff tho.. They were going over to south as far as we could see up towards Crown point, really broad front.
Its been great today, found another routing over HR for the mipits and they look like there coming through from Lupton areas. Had really good numbers for HR and must have missed hundreds also.
I know that call you mean, I also associate that one with the Redstart and the Willow Warbler, but its not the call I mean. This is a sort of "Kuwa" call, very deep noise and cannot really be diagnosed with any other call I know. If I can I will later search the call and if I find it I will send it through.
