Rossendale Ornithologist's Club summer bird race 2014

Sadly there were only 3 attendees for the ROC bird race today.  A grand total of 67 species were recorded with the following of note

  • mute swan - 2 at Cowm Res
  • Canada goose - c45 adult and 11 goslings at Holden Wood, 1pr at Calf Hey, 2 birds with 7 goslings at Holmes Terrace & a pr with 3 goslings on the river at Alderbottom
  • goosander - 2 females at Alderbottom
  • pheasant - 3 calling birds at Holden Wood
  • grey heron - 1 at Holden Wood & 1 at Ogden
  • little grebe - adult and a juvenile at Holmes Terrace
  • great crested grebe - 1 at Calf Hey
  • sparrowhawk - 1 carrying prey at Calf Hey
  • buzzard - 1 near Calf Hey
  • kestrel - 1 near Heap Clough
  • moorhen - adult and 2 juvs at Troy Quarry
  • coot - 2 at Holden Wood
  • oystercatcher - 1pr at Holden Wood & 1pr at Calf Hey
  • little ringed plover - heard at 3 sites
  • lapwing - just 2 at Holden Wood
  • common sandpiper - 2pr and a single at Grane
  • black headed gull - 15 at Jamestone Quarry
  • lesser black backed gull - large numbers passing over EBSW and many over Whitworth
  • herring gull - 2 over EBSW and 1 over Whitworth
  • stock dove - 3 or 4 at Jamestone Quarry
  • tawny owl - 2 at Lumb Vale
  • kingfisher - 1 at Strongstry
  • great spotted woodpecker - 3 at Strongstry & 1 at Alderbottom
  • jay - 2 at Cowm & 1 at Holden Wood
  • goldcrest - singing birds at Troy Wood and Irwell Vale
  • sand martin - good numbers at Jamestone Quarry and Strongstry
  • chiffchaff - singing birds at Lumb Vale, Chatterton, Strongstry & K Steels
  • dipper - 1 at Ewood Bridge
  • stonechat - 1m at Heap Clough
  • wheatear - 3 birds near Jamestone Quarry
  • grey wagtail - 1 at Holden Wood
  • pied wagtail - several juvs at Holden Wood & Ogden
  • linnet - prs at Holden Wood & Jamestone Quarry
  • redpoll - 1 at Rossendale Golf Club
  • bullfinch - calling bird at Calf Hey & a pr at Groundwork
  • reed bunting - min 5 males at Holden Wood and several others around Grane.

notable misses were little owl, snipe, curlew, green woodpecker, raven,nuthatch, treecreeper, grasshopper warbler, whitethroat, spotted flycatcher & long tailed tit
