After a very quite couple of months because of the fine weather it appears winter has has arrived with several days of sub zero temps, hail, sleet, rain and wind.
The bonus is the feeding stations have come alive, below is a list of sightings at some time today, numbers are an average total.
Blue Tit 26 species with the largest number
Great Tit 19 second largest species count
Coal Tit 13 there are unusually high numbers of this species
Long-tailed Tit 16 three different flocks
Chaffinch 21 numbers have been building all week, mostly males
Goldfinch 9 there appears to be one flock which appears and disappears every day around noon
Bullfinch 3 two males one female, there numbers are well down on previous records
Greenfinch 2 male and juvinile arrived this morning and stayed all day
Lesser Redpoll 5 this is there first visit today and were still feeding at dusk
Robin 2 this is a poor count considering how many there are in the woods
Dunnock 6 resident pair have some competition and there has been a lot of chasing going on
Wren 3 I have some mealworms in holes low down and they show well until the food is gone
Nuthatch 7 still good numbers and they are the most aggressive species and will see off a Woodpecker.
Treecreeper 1 only one seen today but have had 3 during the past week
Blackbird 15 numbers have been increasing each day, equal split male female, there is a female with white head markings which has been around here since before May.
Song Thrush 1 first record today for some time
Great Spotted Woodpecker 5 three male and two females regular all day
Jay 5 these are the first visitors each day, they are waiting when I fill the feeders each morning
Jackdaw 3 these are costing me a fortune in suet products
Magpie 2 as above
Woodpigeon 2 fortunately only a couple are brave enough to land in the feeding area
Collard Dove 2 resident pair
Pheasant 1 a male has appeared a couple of times this week but not today
Sparrowhawk 1 male has been around all day but not passed through the feeding today
