After a very quite couple of months because of the fine weather it appears winter has has arrived with several days of sub zero temps, hail, sleet, rain and wind.

The bonus is the feeding stations have come alive, below is a list of sightings at some time today, numbers are an average total.

Blue Tit 26   species with the largest number

Great Tit 19  second largest species count

Coal Tit 13    there are unusually high numbers of this species

Long-tailed Tit 16  three different flocks

Chaffinch 21   numbers have been building all week, mostly males

Goldfinch 9   there appears to be one flock which appears and disappears every day around noon

Bullfinch 3   two males one female, there numbers are well down on previous records

Greenfinch 2   male and juvinile arrived this morning and stayed all day

Lesser Redpoll 5   this is there first visit today and were still feeding at dusk

Robin 2   this is a poor count considering how many there are in the woods

Dunnock 6   resident pair have some competition and there has been a lot of chasing going on

Wren 3   I have some mealworms in holes low down and they show well until the food is gone

Nuthatch 7   still good numbers and they are the most aggressive species and will see off a Woodpecker.

Treecreeper 1   only one seen today but have had 3 during the past week

Blackbird 15   numbers have been increasing each day, equal split male female, there is a female with white head markings which has been around here since before May.

Song Thrush 1   first record today for some time

Great Spotted Woodpecker 5   three male and two females regular all day

Jay 5   these are the first visitors each day, they are waiting when I fill the feeders each morning

Jackdaw 3   these are costing me a fortune in suet products

Magpie 2   as above

Woodpigeon 2   fortunately only a couple are brave enough to land in the feeding area

Collard Dove 2   resident pair

Pheasant 1   a male has appeared a couple of times this week but not today

Sparrowhawk 1  male has been around all day but not passed through the feeding today

Regards Brian.
