G.C.Grebe, both adults caught fish whilst I was watching and fed them to the two young which were lounging in the middle of Holden Wood,

Grey Heron, 1 in Jamestones,

Canada Goose, c140 above Troy and c30 near Ogden,

Mallard, c12,

Buzzard, calling birds,

Sparrowhawk, circling bird being mobbed by swallows and a circling bird being mobbed by crows; maybe the same bird involved,

Kestrel, 1 at the bottom of Heap Clough and one above Jamestones,

Pheasant, calling bird near Jamestones,

Moorhen, 1 in Troy and adult with 2 juvs at Holden Wood,

B.H.Gull, c6 at Holden Wood,

L.B.B.Gull, circling birds high above,

Stock Dove, 12 in Jamestones and 4 in Troy,

Wood Pigeon, c12 at Calf Hey,

Green Woodpecker, 2 in Jamestones plus yaffling birds,

G.S.Woodpecker, 1 flew down Ogden and into K.H. Wood,

Swallow, lots everywhere with perhaps 120 present,

Sand Martin, c8 in Jamestones,

House Martin, 3 high over Heap Clough,

Meadow Pipit, c40 with a flock of 25 in Deep Clough,

Pied Wagtail, c12 with many young,

Grey Wagtail, 1 flew up Heap Clough,

Wheatear, 6 juvs inc 4 near Deep Clough,

Spotted Flycatcher, 1 towards the bottom of Heap Clough,

Coal Tit, calling birds near Jamestones,

Goldcrest, calling birds near Jamestones,

Jay, group of 3,

Goldfinch, charm of 20 near Duke of Wellington,

Chaffinch, c10 in Heap Clough,

Bullfinch, calling birds in Heap Clough,

Linnet, family party of 6 near Jamestones and 2 singles over calling,

Siskin, 1 flew up the valley calling,

Reed Bunting, 3 in a bush at Holden Wood.

Hi Dave

I walked around the reservoirs from around 11:45 to 17:30 and can add the following

  • cormorant - 11 on Ogden and Holden Wood
  • grey heron - 2 at Holden Wood & 1 flying from Ogden to Calf Hey
  • mallard - min 20 at Holden Wood
  • lapwing - 7 at Ogden
  • buzzard - 1 at Calf Hey
  • kestrel - 1 at Holden Wood
  • moorhen - 8 including 3 large juvs at Holden Wood
  • black-headed gull - 40 at Holden Wood & 26 on Ogden
  • herring gull - an adult and a juv dropped in at Holden Wood briefly
  • common tern - an adult was sat with the black-headed gulls in the field at Holden Wood. It flew towards the dam wall and fished for a while before I lost sight of it.
  • whinchat - 1 at Holden Wood at 12:15.  Not located when I returned at 17:00
  • stonechat - 3 in the ferns on the hillside between Holden Wood and Ogden, 1pr on the side of Calf Hey feeding young hidden in juncus & a juv below the dam wall at Calf Hey
  • willow warbler - at least 3 juvs in in a large mixed flock (50+ birds) at the other side of Calf Hey
  • whitethroat - 1 below the dam wall at Calf Hey
  • raven - calling birds near Calf Hey
  • nuthatch - 2 near the houses at Calf Hey & at least 1 in the large mixed flock at the other side of Calf Hey
  • treecreeper - 2 (adult and a juv)near the houses at Calf Hey & at least 1 in a large mixed flock at the other side of Calf Hey
  • long-tailed tit - birds in the large mixed flock at Calf Hey
  • bullfinch - min 2 calling birds at Calf Hey
  • greenfinch - calling birds at Calf Hey
  • linnet - 3 along the side of Ogden
