Southern hawker also has a golf tee. My only doubt with migrant hawker was that this dragonfly appears to have only recently emerged, suggesting local breeding. Whilst other hawker dragonflies were flying around this one stuck to it's own leaf suggesting it had probably emerged from this pond. Migrant hawker is one of several dragonfly species moving northwards, but their larva are said not to tolerate low temperatures, so it is perhaps surprising that they might breed in Rossendale. I am unaware of any recorded breeding within our general area, although this doesn't mean they don't breed here. John and I have recorded them in flight before, but these were thought to be, as the name suggests, migrants. The next few years could be quite interesting for dragonflies in Rossendale, with hopefully several other species becoming more regular
