ROC Summer Bird Race, 7th June 2020
Permalink

Hi everyone,

Due to Covid restrictions it was more of a survey than a race this year with several individuals taking part. There was more flexibility regarding timings with some choosing to to start later and stay out later. The result was the best ever total for a Bird Race of 86 species of which Sarfraz and Paul saw the biggest 'team' total of 69 species.

The highlights for the day included seven species of Warbler and three game birds:

Dabchick, seen in two locations,

Grey Partridge at Clough Bottom,

Red Legged Partridge,

Coot, again from two locations,

Dunlin, HWR,

G.B.B.Gull,

Little Owl,

L.E.O,

Green Woodpecker, Cowm & Grane,

Redstart,

Grasshopper Warbler, 2 birds reeling,

Garden Warbler,

Wood Warbler,

Spotted Flycatcher,

Raven.

Thanks to all who contributed!

Kind Regards,

ROC.

I would have to say it's probably the best day's "birding" I've had up Grane, even though, despite getting up at 5am, I didn't leave the house until nearly 8am due to Sarfraz not fancying the rain! How would he have managed on January's bird race when we were all like drowned rats by 10am?!!! biggrin

We also had a great last hour, managing to tick an amazing 7 species!

Highlights for me were: -

  • a Med gull at Holden Wood res (a first for me)
  • 8 nuthatch all together in the trees at the feeders on Calf Hey car park
  • a tawny owl with 4 fledged young causing havoc in the tree tops!

Indeed it was a good day.  Looking at my text a Paul Burke wrote to me "I think we should forget 6am and see what it's like in an hour".  It was a good day indeed even though we missed Sparrowhawk and Wheatear and just about got Long Tailed Tit!

It is longest I spent up Grane and highlights were:-

1.  That very close Blackcap

2.  The minimum of 8 Nuthatch on feeders

3.  The surprise Tawny Owl and chicks in the last hour.  The last 1 hour was the Golden hour especially with the ticks and the quality of birds just increased.

4.  Mediterranean Gull - the first recorded on a bird race and one which has evaded the teams since their increased visits to Grane since 2015.

Strange I had Herring Gull the day before but not on the day but it has been a poorer spring for this species.

Here is our totals and some photos taken on the day - the infamous road kill also added :-
