The whoopers flew east off the res at around 4:40pm. Another herd of 7 flew over the res towards Clough Bottom a few minutes prior to this
Also noted were the following
grey heron - 1 on back pond
cormorant - 3
Canada goose - 2 flying towards the res near Compston's Cross
mallard - c24, with 1 pr seen copulating!
teal - 4 on back pond
goosander - 2 or 3 redheads
lapwing - 45 flew the full length of the res before turning round & heading north, but may have stayed in the area as a similar sized flock flew over Swallow Shore towards Clough Bottom around 90 minutes later
kestrel - 2
black-headed gull - c60 on the res at 5pm, with another c240 birds seen flying towards the res from Burnley & Clough Bottom in several flocks
common gull - c5
meadow pipit - 2 singles
pied wagtail - 1
stock dove - 2
mistle thrush - 2 near Compston's Cross
redwing - 1 in the car park
jackdaw - perhaps c400 seen flying towards Dunnockshaw to the roost in singles to flocks of 60. No concerted effort made to count them, so I undoubtedly missed some
carrion crow - c16, with 2 foraging on res shore & 1 seen with a small fish that it tossed in the air so that it could swallow it head first
Nice to meet Andrea over near Compston's Cross. If you're reading this hope you didn't get too wet in the rain on the way home
cheers Kevin
