Hi Dave/ Brian

I was out on my own today & Pete & John were out as a team, although we did bump into each other at Cowm and we can add the following

  • teal - birds at Clough Bottom
  • tufted duck - 2 at Cowm & 1 at Wallbank Lodge, all males
  • kingfisher - 1 at Hugh Mill & 1 at Wallbank Lodge
  • green woodpecker - 1 at Spring Mill & 1 at Cowm

these would take the total up to 69.

From the species seen by yourselves we had the following

  • Canada goose - just a single on New Line Res & 3 over Spring Mill
  • pink-footed goose - 49 heading west low over Waterfoot around 9am
  • goosander - 2m & 2f on Spring Mill
  • goldeneye - 2 on Clough Bottom
  • lesser black-backed gull - adult & juv flying down the Irwell Valley over Warth
  • stock dove 2 at Lench
  • little owl - 1 at the head of Lench valley & 1 at Spring Mill
  • great spotted woodpecker - 1 drumming at Springfield Drive in Waterfoot
  • grey wagtail - 1 Waterfoot & 2 Spring Mill
  • dipper - 2 in territorial dispute in Waterfoot
  • stonechat - 1pr at Spring Mill
  • Redwing - 12 in Park Road Waterfoot
  • mistle thrush - 2 nr Tippet Farm, Cowpe
  • fieldfare - 21 at Spring Mill plus many at Peer's Clough
  • nuthatch - birds at Hugh Mill & Higher Lench
  • treecreeper - birds at Park Road, Waterfoot & Cowm
  • jay - neither Pete, John or I saw any, but Maxine said 1 was sat outside our living room window for about half an hour
  • chaffinch - 1 singing at Lench, was my first singing bird of the year
  • siskin - 6 at Warth & 20 at Park Road, Waterfoot
  • bullfinch - 1m at Lench & 2m at Cowm
  • reed bunting - 1m at Clough Bottom & 1m at Spring Mill

John & Pete had 48 species & I had 52 species

I was typing this as Paul was typing his post, so coot & sparrowhawk take the total up to 71

cheers Kevin

Hi All,

Couple of points worth noting, complete lack of Lesser Redpoll, I have had none at the winter feeding stations for three winters, Linnet...I have had the odd one this winter around Ridshaw, but not today. Only two Kingfishers, and both on still waters, I have had none on the Irwell or Ogden for over twelve months !. I think I am correct that we used to struggle for Rook in the winter, over the last two winters there have been good numbers around the fields along Helmshore road.

I do have an advantage with our feeding stations which do provide a very easy 30 + ticks

Regards Brian.

Hi Guys,
We have an addition of a L.E.Owl from a new but undisclosed site which takes the total up to 72 for the day which is a new record for the Winter Bird Race beating the 70 species seen in 2018.
As Brian points out we missed out on Lesser Redpoll as one we'd maybe expect but nothing else missing really.
Regards,
David
