I spent a full day birding in Rossendale at some of the old haunts. I didn't see anything you wouldn't expect but saw lots of breeding success especially with Coal Tits, Stonechats and Wrens which were everywhere. 

Of note were as follows:

 

Mitchell's House Res.

Sparrowhawk, 1 female mobbed by Meadow Pipits and Swallows,

Kestrel, female over the moors,

Lapwing, a single bird flew over,

Stock Dove, a single bird,

Skylark, 3 calling birds from track north of res,

Swallow, c50 over moorland behind the res with many juvs,

Sand Martin, single bird in with Swallows,

Great Spotted Woodpecker, 1 flew towards the wooded dell,

Willow Warbler, 2 calling from the wooded dell,

Song Thrush, 1 flew into dell,

Coal Tit, 2 in the dell,

Wheatear, 4 juvs from track north of the res,

Linnet, flock of c24 with many juvs.

 

Grane.

Cormorant, 7 on side of Ogden,

Canada Goose, c240 at various locations,

Buzzard, just a single bird seen,

Kestrel, 2 hunting birds,

Oystercatcher, adult with week old juv above Troy,

Lapwing, a flock of 39 at Holden Wood,

Swift, 6 high over Holden Wood,

Sand Martin, c30 especially at Jamestones where young being fed,

Grey Wagtail, 2 males at Holden Wood and Jamestones respectively,

Jay, single in trees above Calf Hey,

Blackcap, male feeding in tree canopy near Calf Hey,

Willow Warbler, c4 in Tit flock,

Coal Tit, c20 especially in Heap Clough with many juvs. Part of a tit flock with willow Warblers, L.T., Great & Blue Tits & Treecreepers.

Stonechat, c30, many juveniles, especially around Deep Clough and Jamestones,

Nuthatch, 2 calling birds,

Treecreeper, 2 in tit flock in Heap Clough,

Siskin, 2 calling birds.

 

Cheesden Valley.

Buzzard, 4, quite vocal soaring birds,

Green Woodpecker, a bird yaffled twice near Deeply Hill,

Great Spotted Woodpecker, flew down the valley,

Swallow, c40 with many juvs,

Sand Martin, just 2. None seen at the old breeding site.

House Martin, 4 feeding high,

Jay, 1 near Buckhurst,

Raven, 2 calling from pylons,

Whitethroat, 5 including 3 juvs,

Blackcap, family of 4 catching flying ants!

Willow Warbler, 5 calling birds,

Stonechat, 2 near Cheesden Bar Lodge,

Linnet, family of 5,

Bullfinch, 2 flew down the valley.

 

Clowbridge.

Kestrel, 2 hunting birds,

Raven, single bird calling from a pylon,

Willow Warbler, 3 calling birds,

Stonechat, 2 near Compston's,

Redpoll, 1 over calling.

 

Clough Bottom.

Kestrel, 1 on Swallow Shore,

Lapwing, 29 on Swallow Shore,

Stonechat, 3,

Willow Warbler, 4 calling birds,

Bullfinch, female flew into bottom plantation.
