1 jack snipe flushed from small pond at Scrubbing Mills.

2 common snipe in fields above Cowpe Res.

Mixed flock of fieldfare and redwing (estimate 100 of each) at Higher Lench 10:30.  Another mixed flock of 90 over Brow Edge Quarry (estimate 30 fieldfare and 60 redwing) 11:30.  70 fieldfare over Cragg Quarry and on to Cowpe Moss 12:30.  20 fieldfare over Waterfoot 07:45.

Hi Kev -

Hope you don't mind, I've added the date to the end of your title.

I've not heard of Scrubbing Mills - any chance of a grid ref or further info?

With your postings and Bryan Yorks', the fieldfare and redwing certainly seem to think winter is coming!

Hi Jim

Unfortunately I don't have a grid ref for Scrubbing Mills.  I don't possess a map of the area either. It is however only 100 yards at most from Hurdles Quarry.  Bob would possibly be able to give you a grid ref.

cheers Kevin

No, that's fine Kev.  Hurdles Quarry is near enough.  Grid ref for that is SD822218.  I wasn't sure if it was in Cowpe area.

All the best,

For info, Bob has let me know that the grid ref for the Scrubbing Mills site is SD819218 at the NW end of Hurdles Quarry.  It is at the top of the old chain road that starts behind Smith and Nephew at Cloughfold.  It is where the flags from the quarry were prepared before being sent down the chain road to the railway sidings.

See - industrial archaeology as well as birding!
