Staghiils Woods 08:55 2 great spotted woodpeckers drumming & 1 female seen in a different part of the wood, suggesting 3 prs present. 2 prs of coal tit, 1 pr long tailed tit, 6 redwing, 3 song thrush singing, 1 pr mistle thrush & 1 pr bullfinch.
Warth/ Higher Lench 09:351 great spotted woodpecker seen flying towards Staghills Woods, 1 kingfisher on Kenroy’s Pond, 1pr green woodpecker & 1 pr Long tailed tit carrying nest material.
Hurdles Quarry area 10:201 little owl, 3 stock dove & 3 meadow pipit in the quarry, 2 skylark at Scrubbing Mills & 2 on Whittaker Pasture, 10 lapwing on Whittaker Pasture & 1 chiffchaff in the hawthorns on the hillside below Scrubbing Mills (probably a new arrival).
Lower Cloughfold 11:301 pr goldcrest , 1 song thrush, bullfinch calling & 1 chiffchaff singing ( possibly an overwintering bird).
Holden Wood Res 14:201 great crested grebe, 7 cormorant, 1 grey heron, 7 Canada geese, 10 mallard, 3 moorhen, 2 black headed gull, 14 lapwing, 1 curlew over, 1m sparrowhawk being mobbed by 4 carrion crows on the hillside across the road, 1 or 2 jays heard, 14 meadow pipit, 1 pr long tailed tit near the H olden Vale Hotel, 2 pr stonechat & at least 5 reed bunting.
Yes I'm pretty sure that I didn't count any of the birds twice. Later in the day around 17:00 hrs I saw 7 cormorants flying over the reservoirs heading towards Blackburn. I assume that these were some of the same birds.
hmm.. their numbers seemto fluctuate from 4 to 11. if you go to holden wood an hour before sunset and wait around you see the cormorants fly in and get together in one of the trees of holden wood. therre always seem to be 4/5 bird sin the tree - are they young?
