Lucky you with the harrier! You seem to have had a fair number of Blackcaps, too. Bob and Kevin haven't been seeing many. I had one singing in the garden here in Bolton this morning, too.
Where was your Gropper, by the way?

Hi Jim,
Yes for once I was in the right place at the right time for the Harrier. As it was heading into Rossendale I did try to alert other birders (Bob initially) but I'd no network coverage from the top of Bull Hill!
The Blackcaps set off fairly slow but as the day warmed up they started to be more numerous, especially around E.B.S.W.
The Gropper was reeling strongly in the rushy field behind where Mayfield Chicks was and adjacent to the river at Ewood Bridge.
Regards,
David.

Hi David,
Nice siting for Rossendale, well done!!  Would you be aware that Walney had there 2nd Marsh Harrier of the year passing through about mid afternoon yesterday (29th April 2007) see Walney website: http://walneybo.blogspot.com/ - And I was wondering if......it could possibly be the same bird, seeing has you had yours at approx 0930hrs.
They report having had the bird mid afternoon, so if we say that could read as 1500hours, it would make the time from you seeing yours of approx 5 1/2 hours and a probable estimate in mileage of the distance has the Harrier flies would be say 70 miles making time at approx 15 miles per hour without stops - Do you think this feasible?

To my knowledge there have not been any other reports of Marsh Harrier on the move through Lancs yesterday..

Room for thought!!

Bryan.
