Large Red Damselfly (male)

Hi everyone, it is the first time I have used this forum; so I hope this goes ok.

I spotted a Pyrrhosoma nymphula -Large Red Damselfly (male), resting on comfrey leaves next to my pond at free lane allotments.

I though it was resting due to the recent bad weather - but after reading other posts it had probably recently emerged.

The knowledge that members of this forum and the club have is excellent - keep up the good work.

I may even join the club if I ever get any spare time!

Simon Murphy.

Thanks for that Simon -
Any chance of a map ref for Free Lane Allotments?

I don't know whether you are aware of the atlas survey that is under way? See
http://www.dragonflies.org.uk/

If you fancy covering an area regularly for damsel/dragonflies let me know.

Thanks Jim - I have now entered that into the survey online 'quick entry'
e.g. at - http://www.dragonflies.org.uk/
I can do an area close to and/or around Free Lane area for the main survey of dragonflies/damselflies..
The grid reference closest to is - SD7813220805 - this is where I am going to spend most of my time. It is where the smaller river (don't know name) runs from Helmshore to Irwell Valley/Vale.
Cheers Simon.

It's the Ogden, I think. That would put you in tetrad SD72V. If you put this in the search box on the Location page of the dragonfly atlas site it should show you the boundaries of the tetrad.

It would be great if you could check the ponds, rivers etc within it once a month or so.

I've an idea Dale Pollard (Dog Nobbler) lives not far from the location you gave.

All the best
