on saturday about 4 pm i saw a strange insect - one i have never seen before.  it appeared to be a fly and it was on a wall...it was slimmer in body than say houseflies and much smaller  ..possibly under a cm long.....

the colouring was unusual....it's body appeared dividied into 2 - first bit a turquoisey blue and rear bit red.  it was on the wall but would fly around a little.

i have never seen a fly like that before.

Hi Sarfraz

It may well be worth checking this ID against a picture I took a month or so ago.

Click on the link and it should take you straight to the picture.

Hi
To answer both questions together would be to say approx 8-10mm in length. The pic probably belies it's true colour of a more cerise come "ruby" colour.

There are several in this family with slightly different appearances.

As to whether they are common or not I would guess this would be more about your place in the country. Years ago it was more common down South, well what isn't, but like other creatures it has increased it's range to further North.
Cracking little insect though and the colour really is a shock!

yes surely it was a cracking insect. how something so small can attract your attention just shows how eye-catching it is. i have never seen it as a child when we would play out and often catch wasps or bees about 20 years ago.
