Beginning this November, the BTO is coordinating fieldwork for a new atlas project combining both winter and breeding season distributions.
Running over 5 years (4 winters and 4 breeding seasons) from 2007 to 2011, it will be based on 10Km squares as before (most of Rossendale lies in SD82 with parts in SD72, SD71 and SD81) but part of the survey involves timed visits to at least 8 tetrads in each square tetrads (there are 25 tetrads per 10Km square).
These documents give more detail about the project and the methodology. Please contact me if you are interested in helping as I've volunteered to help coordinate things for Rossendale (jimormerod AT yahoo DOT co DOT uk)
