a couple of weeks ago i heard a bird calling near holden woodwhich was very distinct.    today i saw a great spotted woodpecker there, my first sighting of a woodpecker of any sort in rossendale and was just checking to make sure i identified it correctly and as i did that i played with the sound.

a few weeks  ago i heard a bird calling although never saw it and after playing with the call sound son the rspb website i am 100% certain it was a lesser spotted woodpecker or something that sounds almost exactly like it

Tricky one, that. If you look at a post from DogNobbler about 23rd Sep, headed Cor Blimey - he reports that the bailiff at Grane reported seeing a Lesser Spot and that he (DogNobbler) had heard a Yaffle (Green Woodpecker).

Looking at the RSPB link you have, the call of Lesser Spot sounded very much to me like a higher pitched Green Woodpecker. Find the entry for the latter species and listed to its call and see what you think.

I'm inclined to think yours was a Green if only because Lesser Spot is so much more uncommon, but you never know.
