HAS ANYONE ELSE SEEN AN INCREASE IN ROBIN NUMBERS,I HAVE COUNTED AS MANY EIGHT ON ONE FEEDING STATION,AND UNUSUALLY THEY SEEM TO BE TOLERATING EACH OTHER,VERY STRANGE.
Hi Brian, My Robins must have gone down the hill to you!! Could be due to the weather. I can usually (sorry Bob) pin at least 3 down from various windows round my house just lately I have been lucky to see 1. Probably not a good explanation, but birds with no territory to protect may have gone off in search of pastures new. Think we noticed the numbers down there on bird race day. Ina
Here in our garden in Bolton we aren't seeing more Robins (usually 2-3 in the garden at any one time) but we have noted that they do seem to be tolerating one another when feeding. We wondered if they had already started to pair up when the colder weather came - they had been singing quite well for a week or two - and the birds feeding together were male and female.
I did a couple of TTVs around Wayoh and Entwistle earlier in the week and noted a distinct lack of finches (especially Chaffinch, Greenfinch and the like) yet the numbers of these species in the garden appear normal. I wonder if they have moved from the real countryside to be nearer to the garden food sources for the duration?
Regarding the visit to Entwistle - the Herons were very active at the heronry there. It was difficult to estimate occupied nests as you can only view from a fairly narrow section of the path where there are larches and sparser trees so you can only see some of the nests from below. Counting perched birds from across the res gave about 25.
H Brian Yes got the Waxwing sightings hope to get there today as I am told they are feeding very low down. Snow what snow I say!
The Goshawk is still out there and this has been compounded with another Female being lost in Rochdale so there could well be some angry farmers as chickens become "dinner"
Thanks Brian.
