Several people have posted dragonfly sightings recently prompting me to post some information about progress.
Below is a list of Rossendale tetrads showing the number of species recorded last year per tetrad. Some of the tetrads have been surveyed in good detail and have species lists of 8 - 10. probably the best we can expect in our upland area. Other tetrads have smaller species lists and need further attention to see if other species are present. Rather more have no records at all and would benefit from a series of visits over the next 3 years or so.
2007 was not a particularly good year for dragonfly recording owing to the poor weather so the fact that we have such a good species list is quite encouraging. Hopefully this year's weather will be better.
The methodology is not too time consuming: visiting suitable waters about once a month around noon in nice sunny weather between now and October, should enable all the dragonfly / damselfly species present to be picked up.
Please take a look at the list below and see if there are any tetrads you could help with this year. (Clicking on the tetrad number will open an OS map showing that tetrad.)
