Whilst it's starting to quite down a bit I found time to make quite a start on my trip to Lesvos. I don't know how many others have been, I am sure many have, but it was my first trip and would recommend this to any that fancy a birding trip in great surrounding with plenty of good birds.

If you would like to read a little more about my trip please click the link below. I am still adding a few pictures and text but a good framework is up and running. Hope you enjoy the read.

Nice to read about your trip. Nice photo's too! Birding abroad is just so different to birding in England. The videos are good too. Makes me want to go there!

Thanks for the comments Sarfraz

Cracking holiday destination as there are no burger bars anywhere near you and the birds are so accessible.

The climate at that time of year is superb and just about anything can and does turn up. Sadly the biggest influx ever over a 4 week period of Blue Cheeked Bee-Eater occurred this year with one right outside the hotel...alas I was birding elsewhere checking every single Bee Eater I could find!

People are great although info about sightings can be closely guarded by some but on the whole info is given. Lots of hides have been put up and work to aid birds has taken place so the future of some of the key areas, like Kalloni pool will be saved.

Hi Ste,
Did you go on an organised 'birding' trip or do your own thing?  I was thinking of Lesvos as a destination for my next trip abroad, so just picking your brains really.
You took some cracking photos, I can but dream.
Regards
Ina

Hi Ina
Thanks for the kind comments. The trip was done all ourselves as I think the organised birding trips in destinations like this are far too expensive and you really do not need them. I suppose I do a lot of "homework" before I go to such places birding but other than that it's done on a daily "where shall we go tomorrow basis"

I know you enjoyed Mallorca as we have but Lesvos is another planet regarding not just possible species of birds to be seen but also the sheer volumes.

The thing also that stood out was the wildflowers....simply stunning! Truly a beautiful island that is still very Greek. To get the best out of this place you have to book early and recommend Skalla Kalloni as a good base as birding on foot to some ace places are easy and it is quite easy to get to others via car or bike.

Personally, although not the most travelled of people, I think it a must for anybody fancying a european destination where great birds.foods, wildlife and wildflowers abound and are easily accessible.

Don't hesitate Ina just go for it!

PS Some will like, others won't, but you are never alone on Lesvos at peak migration (mid April-Mid May) as so many birders are around and chances are your hotel will be 90% birders. Some hotels like Pela and Kalloni 2 all have logs of birds seen that day and it is quite something reading whats about.

If you need any info I will gladly help. Bye for now.
