There is a feeling that certain species are in decline in Rossendale so we would like to ensure that we get as many breeding records sent to us as possible. The Lapwing is one such species and we would like to receive records of breeding or attempted breeding, ideally with grid reference. In addition we...

Last Friday I spent an enjoyable day helping with a survey looking for queens of the Bilberry Bumblebee at White Coppice near Chorley. It was led by Ben Hargreaves of Lancs Wildlife Trust who is the Project Leader for "Plan Bee", aimed at protecting and boosting numbers of bees of all kinds. It is foc...

I'm not sure whether Ian Brady mentioned this at Monday's meeting, but Eric sadly died last Tuesday 10th February at the age of 95. Both he and his wife, Margaret, had been suffering from dementia for several years but Eric died of a heart attack. Eric was a big influence on birding in Rossendale and w...

Following the demise of the ROC website I've resurrected something I played with a while ago which fills a similar function - a Wiki. The URL is http://roc.wikispaces.com/Home if you take a look you'll see it contains similar information to that on the old website. I've also back-linked to it fro...

I notice other forums often have it set up that the most recent message in a thread is at the top of the thread when you open it. Is that something ROC Forum users would prefer? I think I can alter it in the settings.

FreeUK who hosted our main website (www.rossendalebird.freeuk.com) have closed the site along with other free sites that would not opt for paid hosting. Apologies for this, although there was very little on there other than back copies of Bird Reports. You'll probably find the logo missing at the...

At time when people are getting out their new notebooks / diaries for another year's bird recording I thought it might be worth posting a fairly simple mechanism for storing records electronically so they can easily be sent in for adding to the main database. It involves an MS Excel spreadsheet, but i...

Neil Burke has drawn my attention to a message on the Greater Manchester Bird Forum pointing out that there is an active group of egg-thieves operating from the Heywood area and that they trawl forums such as these to get clues as to the location of nests birds of prey etc. When posting on the Forum pleas...

If you have ever taken a pic. of a micro-moth with your phone and it comes out with a blueish tincture..a warning! Aberrations of micro-moths are very rare but the blue picture is real enough. What has happened is that the phone sensors exaggerate blue colour so not really a genetic aberration of the mo...
