Book review - Where to Watch Birds in North West England by S.Dunstan et al(2026)

This book is the 3rd edition/revised version of North West England in the "Where to Watch" series of books by Helm, written by

Guest  & Hutcheson originally in 1992. A lot has changed in the birding-Cheshire still retained(c.26 sites,(similar to original given subdivisions etc.). Cumbria is now omitted(c.25 sites) & replaced by Greater Manchester-which has grown to 20 sites in the new book(up from 5 in original edition!!). So there is plenty of new material, and the sites are nearer! Still, if landscape/scenery & motoring float your boat the original could be preferable for some, but you need more time, a larger wallet and use more petrol !

But what about Rossendale birds? Nothing here(whether this is good or bad depends on your point of view) & many North-West sites are omitted e.g. Thornton-in-Craven, Wycoller Country Park(which are reasonable for birding). There is a section on the West Pennine Moors, but Rossendale not included(sp far as I have yet read).

I give it 4*(out of 5)as I found out new information, often in its main commentary(aside from the sites).
