Owl hooting at 2am today for a few minutes. Must be a Tawny. I wonder what they feed on. I live just south of H'den town centre, in the Greenfield Ward and there is not much in terms of greenry here. There is the Memorial Gardens and then to the east you have farmland/hills. I have heard them in the summer too. There is an odd mouse and rat but then plenty of Jackdaws, Pigeons, Starlings, Sparrows - do any of these roost in the open and are likely to fall victim to Tawny Owls?
Just over a week ago I saw something very strange. A Pied Wagtail mobbing a particular LBB Gull in a LBB Gull flock which were moving south above Winfields. It was really dive bombing one particular gull furiously giving it some trouble.
There must have been 2 owls that night. Having watched BBC Springwatch Episode 6 I realised that male and female Tawny Owls have different calls. Funnily enough I heard both calls but assumed it was one owl. We learn something new every day. Its funny but I have heard a female quite a few times over the year but I assumed it must have been a bat or a cat.
I did have a look at that but unfortunately my Owls do not qualify I heard them 2 days before the starting date. I have not heard them since then too. Wll be keeping my ears open though!
