I have never seen a Brambling and I hoped to break that curse this winter.  It has been a bad winter migrant year for me.  I have not  seen or heard any skeins of Pink Feet go over and seen less than usual numbers of Fieldfares and Redwings.   Winter of 2009 was good as  I saw my first ever Waxwings - a flock of 40.  I saw plenty of the other migrants too.

Where in East Lancs or nearby out of county areas are good places to see Bramblings?

Hi Sarfraz

Might be worth checking a few peoples post as I know some have posted local sightings. Good luck.

Hi I do have a look through the posts but have not noticed any sightings recently or maybe I missed. If anyone has any ideas of where there are Bramblings on a regular basis do let me know!

When do they head back?

Hi Sarfraz

Bramblings generally head back in mid April.  If you really wanted to try and find one, the best site recently has been a garden on Edgeside Lane.  This is the garden at the back of the house nearest the childrens' play area in Edgeside park.  I have been fortunate enough to have had bramblings visiting my feeders at Gaghills in Waterfoot this winter, but they have not been as regular as they have been in previous years.

cheers Kevin

Fearns school is on Edgeside Lane, if you know where that is.  The garden I mentioned is about 100 yards further down the road from the school just past the childrens play area.

If you zoom in you now get a very good street view which is quite scary and shows you better the lane you need to walk down to see the garden.

The street map is correct.  To get to Fearns School follow Booth Road from Waterfoot.  Edgeside Lane is about half a mile on the left.  You can see the school and the school playing fields on your left hand side before you turn.  Edgeside Park is about 400 yards down this road.  You should have at least another month for a chance to see a brambling, but be aware that there haven't been many seen this winter.

good luck Kevin

Thanks! I took a quick trip there today for 5 minutes. I felt weird getting my binoculars out there - I did not want to arouse suspicions. Any idea what is the best time or conditions for Brambling?

I can proudly say that I have finally seen these elusive little birds at Martin Mere on Sunday. They are absolutely beautiful. I managed to record them on my video cam but I could do with Redwings and Fieldfares too. I have seen both of the thrushes and also videoed Fieldfares but I want more. Any good place in Rossendale to get reasoably close footage of Redwings and Fieldfares?
