WAXWING REPORTS FROM THE LANCASTER & DISTRICT. OCT/NOV 2010 (up to 22nd Nov 2010)

Date: November 23, 2010 03:21PM5 on Black Dyke Road, Arnside at 11:50am today, but not found later.

Date: November 23, 2010 03:06PM

80 approx, Greaves Road, opposite Greaves Methodist Church 13.00

Date: November 21, 2010 10:50PM

13 waxwings in the same silver birch as before between Fairgarth Drive and Harling Bank, Kirkby Lonsdale at 12.40pm, today (Sun 22nd). They flew off after a few minutes. I understand from neighbours that the rowan tree is empty of berries now. Interesting in November 2004 a party of up to 17 waxwings visited this rowan tree regularly for several weeks. It was guarded by a very aggressive mistle thrush and it was sometime before the birds managed to outwit it. I don't know the lifespan of a waxwing but do wonder if there is flock memory as they seem to have arrived at similar times to 2004 (early am and midday).

Levens Waxwing colour ring details

Date: November 8, 2010 09:27PM

Ringed:
NW50005
31/10/10
Wellheads Ind. Estate, Dyce, Aberdeen
1CY male

Read in field:
07/11/10
Levens, just north of Milnthorpe, SE Cumbria

This fits in with the impression that this autumn's irruption has so far involved a lot of birds whizzing through/over sites without settling. This seems to have been changing in the last few days with some birds discovering good rowan crops
Attachments:

Date: November 8, 2010 01:21PM

3 Waxwings opposite the junction of Ullswater Road and Moorgate at 1pm. Not obviously ringed but the light is poor. They're in high trees opposite the Britannia pub with a well stocked rowan behind the wall.

Ringed Waxwings

Date: November 7, 2010 11:08PM

Please check any Waxwing flocks very carefully:

1) A metal ring on the right leg with a row of numbers ABOVE the address, ending in '8'. This was photographed in Kendal on 28th October and, of course, could now be miles away. It is not a British ring & may be Finnish

If you are lucky enough to encounter this bird, please try and read at least the last three numbers (e.g. confirming that the last number IS an '8') AND see if you can decipher any part of the address (apart from the word 'museum' which isnt a lot of help!!)

2) The Levens flock today held a bird with a colour ring combination which is probably from eastern Scotland. There is a very slight doubt over the top one of the three colours on the left leg, so if anyone can help........... Also if the metal ring can be read - again the last three digits may be enough, it can be narrowed down to an individual bird.

This is the first ringed Waxwing to be seen in the LDBWS area, but we have a chance of others this winter!

14 have recently been metal-ringed in Kendal. The letters and numbers (usually two letters, followed by 5 numbers) will usually be BELOW the British Museum address. Any sightings of these will be useful as local movements.

Could the ringer please let us know which leg these were put on and whether the letters/numbers were at the bottom on all rings used. This would be helpful for the significant number of photographers out there. Thanks.
