After a walk around Cowm Reservoir. this afternoon, at about 4-30pm a small bat(probably Pipistrelle) was seen flying around near the bottom entrance to the reservoir. It flew quite close and was seen for about 5 minutes.I am fairly sure that I have never seen one in winter before. Can anyone shed any light on this unusual(to me) sighting? Regards, Dave Ousey.
Almost certainly a Pipistrelle, i had one last week round a street lamp outside the house, if the air temp is anything above 4/5 degrees and constant they will feed at most times of the year.
Something I've never seen before, given the time of year and hour of day, 1.00pm. but whilst working on Rawtenstall Cricket Ground today two bats. pipistrelles I think, spent at least 30 minutes circling the ground, obviously enjoying the heat and sunshine and I suppose a few flying insects, before disappearing into the eaves of a neighbouring house. Is this normal behaviour and would the visiting Peregrine consider them suitable prey?.
I would think that time of day would be highly unusual even for Pipistrelles, which they almost certainly were, it may be possible they were disturbed. I have been privileged to have handled these bats, i dont think even a peregrine would catch one and if it did it would hardly be a snack.
