We now have two pair of Spotted flycatcher on the river, the second pair are down to Sarfraz who was here on Thursday and on his way home thought he saw another bird, i have now found the pair who are nest building this afternoon.

The link is a video i took from some distance so not to disturb during nest construction.

The first pair are very active around the nest site.

That is a shock! This bird was a "lifer" for me and then I find another pair! The most ironic thing is that I could not even find the first pair. To see one was very good but then to see another pair on top of that well excellent! Is it the first time 2 pairs have nested in that area?

Sarfraz,

No we have had two pair last year we think, but it was never proved, if you read David Nuttalls report for Sunday you will see mention of a Spotted flycatcher at Alderbottom, i have been and found this bird and watched it for a while but can only see one bird, but possibly we have another pair.

Regards Brian

Hi Brian

Tried the river path yesterday, 3 Spot-flies in total. one in a tree behind Kay's garden. 2 more hawking the field from the fence nearer Stubbins.

While I had my head over the wall a male Kingfisher landed on  a branch near kissing gate.

Lots of young tits & Willow Warbs....no sight nor sound of Garden Warb though.

Regards

Ina

Hi Ina,

Glad you saw the Spotted flycatchers, the Garden warblers are really elusive, i sat on the wall at the kissing gate for nearly an hour yesterday evening and had two quick sightings right next to the main gate into the field.

The Kingfisher is a good spot here in the summer, that is a favourite fishing area in the winter.
