Mammal group in Rossendale

Hi there!

Does anyone know if there is a local mammal group in Rossendale?  I have seen others in Bolton etc, but I want to know what is on my doorstep. If not, is there a willing tutor who doesn't mind me tagging along, asking lots of questions and helping with surveys?

I have just finished the FSC Mammal ID course, which was fantastic, and I want to keep going and get as much practice as possible.

I can't walk past an Oak tree now, without scrambling around underneath it looking for eaten nuts!!!

Hi Sharon,

Welcome to the forum, Lancs wildlife trust and the East lancs Bat group cover our area, as you can see on our mammal section we record any mammals when we see them. There are some good areas around the river valley and on the moors above to see Deer, Fox, Badger e.t.c.

Thanks for that.

I should have given a bit more detail.  I am looking at small mammals (mice, shrews and voles) really and the bats.

I see the deer early in the morning and the fox over near the halo, but I haven't seen any badger sets around here.  I will have to keep my eyes open.

Do you know anyone who uses Longworth traps to see what there is around here?

Hi,

I have used live traps and identified Wood mouse, House mouse, Field vole, Bank vole, all in good numbers. I have not found many Shrews, on two occations only I have had Common shrew.

I am not great on Bats, but have identified around here Common pipistrelle, Whiskered and Daubentons.

Keep searching.

Hi Sharon

There is an East Lancs Bat Group (http://www.eastlancsbats.org) but I'm not sure how active they are and what area they cover.
