Sparrowhawk seen 19.9.11 in front garden, Haslingden near to A56. A Female swooped down to take a wood pigeon from the tree, one of a pair of wood pigeons we have had visit daily for the last 2 years.  It took the pigeon to the ground and started to tear into into for several minutes until a passer by disturbed it and it flew a short distance near the hedges.  It then managed to fly off at a low height carrying the pigeon with one foot.  Not bad when the pigeon is above half its own size.  This is the first time I have seen a Sparowhawk come so close in an urban garden.  Has anyone else sighted such in this area?

I see them daily in Helmshore where they do a good job of reducing the collared dove population.

Hi
I spent the weekend away at Spurn and I set my trail cam up to record mainly mammal visitors and on return I noted a pile of feathers in the garden. On closer inspection of the photos on the trail cam it became evident whom was responsible.

It was a Starling!
This last few weeks have seen several visits, mainly by this years birds. A failed raid of a Feral Pigeon was the most disappointing!

The famous wildlife photographer Eric Hosking once said, luck is everything but you have to be there to press the shutter, in this case the Sparrowhawk did that, but you placed the camera in the right place. Excellent.
