Nice one Craig! Glad you got on to the Mipits, plus other stuff as well.  If you had been there yesterday I'll bet you would have got four figure marks .... I think yesterday they peaked, well at least  over here at Caton (1600 in about 4hrs) and also at Oxenhope/Haworth areas (7000 in about 4hours). and I'll bet Laund would have been at about 4000 in 4hrs and Grane about 2000 in 4 hrs.

My mind boggles.... to think how it used to be at Laund/Grane, in fact thats the thing I really do miss most, watching the pipits on great "push" days coming over from the Accrington direction in their 20+ parties, and coming the full breadth, and multiple heights.... Can you remember it.  You get good Chaffinches here (Hutton Roof) but little on the Mipits.

Gosh! I'll never forget that day you put that lure on, Ive never seen anything like it they way they came tumbling down. No birds to about 100 in minutes.....

Can you remember that Pied coloured "Meadow Pipit" we got come to the nets at Grane, the one that just would not go into the net...

Its so funny the Spurn birds and all sites to the East peaked at about one week to 10 days ago.  I am sure theres (East) are Icelantic and ours (West) are British.

I will be out again tomorrow and for that matter everyday ready for the Thrushes.  Already heard a couple of Redwing both yesterday and again today.

I will keep checking your reports, there great....

All the best to you, Sue and your Mum and Dad and family.  Tell them we do think about them regular.

Bryan.

Hi Bryan, Yes the good old days, i remember them fondly. Not been up on Laund since then but they were great to watch. Caught lots on Clowbridge Res dam for a few years but not done any for a bit, but having a go this year again.

Spurn started on 8th Sept to get big numbers through, with 20,200 there on 13th!!

Me and dad were there from 18th for 3 days ringing a few, and still decent numbers coming through them. Wing length size said they were mainly Icelandic`s.

Never been around Limy Lane area at the right time before but i was amazed how many were coming over, and not just pipits. Will try to have a proper watch asap.

Hope Sandra and yourself are keeping really well.

Craig.

I have always enjoyed the reports of Vis Mig and this year I am looking forward to the Thrushes. I am going to give my local spot a go shortly. Don't know what to expect but I thought it could be good......or not!

Craig
Shame as I was there for a couple of days including the 18th. Rather quiet overall but did get to see the first Pale Bellied Brent of the Autumn. I had a nosey around Kew as I stayed at C & A pub. Did you get the "northern" Treecreeper?

All the best and keep those vis migs coming for us laymen.

Hi Craig,

I've always thought that Hamledon & Crown Point should funnel the birds through. How was the wind direction?

No sign of passerines moving here yet but lots of Kestrels & Spars on the move.

All the best to you & the family

Andy

PS Had a young Lammergeier & Golden Eagle linking tallons last week....

Hi Ste,

Always great to hear from you and yes I think you should!!

Pick up thy glasses and "vismig" and see lots and lots of mighty Thrushes as they enter the grey skies airspace of Rossendale (well perhaps not grey today)....

Had Redwing calls every morning this week, and had lots and lots of Song Thrush on way up to Hutton this morning, so they are already coming in fast and furious.

I look forward to reading your reports in due course.

Ive always considered the valley which comes through Whitworth towards Bacup to be one of the Fieldfare channelling areas and sure it might be worth watching somewhere along there....

Hi Ste, Didn`t get caravan sorted till 5ish on 18th so thats prob why we didn`t meet.

Didn`t see "northern Treecreeper", but dont know the difference anyway!!

Only M Pipits and Swallows moving through in numbers, on land,  but still superb to see "real" migration on a sand dune spit out in the sea.

Its funny how we say its quiet at spurn when theres no rarities or loads of commener migrants on land, but if you stand at the Narrows and look 100yrds west theres 20,-40,000 waders/ducks on the Humber, then you turn east and the North Sea is full of passage sea birds!! I could sit there all autumn.

Hi Andy, The wind was SW 15ish. Clear and sunny. Will try and have a proper look when i get chance but when conditions are like that im netting usually. Quite good morning though for round here. Its like one of your French Alps col`s (col de waggoners) without the birds!!

Say hi to Ruth and kids. Let us know when you are home next.

Craig.

Hi Guys

Bryan...I shall do that but I am down for a couple of weeks of migration watching off the the most South-Westerly tip of Europe for a couple of weeks shortly. I have a plan for this Sunday though. In the mean time if you could hold up a bit of migration I would appreciate it. Thanks for the chin up.

Craig

The Swallows are what I most noted on Sat and Sunday particularly late afternoon. I suppose the Humber is never "quiet" but I have to come clean and say estuary watching is not my thing. The quiet was in comparison to what was seen a few days prior to the weekend as a lot of birds moved through on land.

I too could sit for hours watching the skies and seas but sadly I have to accommodate all in the group. Regarding the "Northern" Treecreeper....I am disappointed in your lack of knowledge considering your wealth of experience and travel!! It has a very characteristic "aye up lad! after each contact call and in winter plumage has both a cardigan type appearance and is often accompanied by a Whippet.

Well it made me laugh.
