A weekend at Strongstry feeding stations.

Blue tit 9    Numbers down on last year

Great tit  14  Same as last year

Coal tit  4      Have recovered from a poor start

L T tit    7     Well down on last year

Bullfinch 12   Numbers have increased year on year

Chaffinch  4    Static numbers

Greenfinch  2   Fewer than summer

Goldfinch   4    As above

Redpoll [lesser, carduelis cabaret]  9  These are here all the time, last year odd ones

Robin 5   Less than last year

Wren  1   We can usually count 4 or 5

Dunnock  2    Usual pair

Nuthatch 5   Normal 

Treecreeper  1  Both days taking mealworm

Great spotted woodpecker  3  Normal numbers

Jay  5   These appear to be braver, less flighty

Woodpigeon  1   Have had many more in the past

Collard dove 2   Local pair 

Magpie  2   Numbers were greater in summer

Jackdaw 2   Fewer than normal

Pheasant 1   Never seen more than one here

Blackbird  10  These numbers have been here for a few weeks

Mistle thrush  5  Constant all week

Song thrursh  1  I am guessing this has been the same bird all week

The above numbers are maximum seen at the same time.

Also seen,  4 Grey squrrel, 1 Fox, 2 Badger, 1 Brown rat and several Wood mice.

As with Kevin no brambling yet.

Hi Brian

Great number of birds there and a good quality spectrum. Just a thought are the Common Redpoll, common or Lesser? Or are you saying they are just common, as in lots?

I share the dismal Greenfinch numbers.

Have you noticed any disease in any of your finches at all?

Hi Ste,

I have not got a clue why I wrote common, I have now edited it, my only excuse is I have had the telescope on them looking for Mealy [common].

I have looked for signs of disease but have seen none.
