Fri 7th Sept 2012.   6.30-10am.

Cloudy with drizzle at times. Some low mist/cloud on hilltops early which lifted. Wind W/NW 10-15 and gusty.

Heavy rain to the North of us probably affected numbers. Started ok then dried up by 9am.

M Pipit numbers up again, for 1st 2 hrs anyway, then nothing. 2 late Swifts S. Noticable lack of a Tit flock as yet which usually attracts other migrants (w warbs, blackcaps, chaffinch etc). Only seen maximum of 2 G Tit, 1 B Tit, 1 Coal Tit(ringed today) and 3 L T Tits so far in 4 visits!!

M Pipit - 100+ S, in small parties from 6.30. (4 ringed).

Chaffinch - 15 S in 1-2`s. (5 ringed).

L Redpoll - 15 S, several small groups. (7 ringed).

Greenfinch - 6 S singles.

Present - Goldcrest 4, W Warb 2(2 ringed), Goldfinch 6, Blackbird 1(ringed), Swift 2(quite late).

17th, 18th + 19th Oct 2012.

After a brilliant 2 weeks birding in south eastern France (trip report to follow), local birding is somewhat depressing!

Managed 2hrs on 17th but very little moving. (14 Greenfinch and 1st Redwing ringed). Sat up there in vehicle for 1hr in  20mph and frequent heavy showers on 18th but had decent numbers of Greenfinch passing through (100+) but weather too bad to put nets up.

19th was overcast and calm wind, perfect conditions?? Wrong. Very quiet with virtually nothing moving! Most numerous birds were M Pipits. No Redwing / Fieldfare seen. Hopefully the weekend will be better.

M Pipit - 30+ 1-2`s, ignoring tupe lure suggesting mainly adults. (1 ringed)

Greenfinch - 10+. (5 ringed)

Goldfinch - 10+. (6 ringed)

L Redpoll - 2 groups. (5 ringed)

R Bunting - 6. singles. (2 ringed)

Present - Sparrowhawk(1 male ringed), S Thrush(1 ringed), Blackbird(1 ringed), Robin(1 ringed),Blue Tit(1 ringed), Cormorant 3 N, Chiffchaff 1, Kestrel 1,  Goldcrest 2.

22nd,23rd and 24th Oct 2012.

22nd and 23rd .

Both mornings very quiet despite massive arrival of Redwing/Fieldfare/Brambling on East Yorks coast on monday morning. Thought tuesday morning could produce decent numbers here but didnt happen and strong E winds killed most other movement aswell.

24th Oct. 7-9.30am.

Redwing and a few Fieldfare more noticable for first 2 hrs today with several 20-30 bird flocks dropping in from above low cloud base to tape lure then leaving to the NW. Strong ENE wind 15, Gusting 20+, made netting very difficult. A few finches and M Pipit also going South.

Redwing - 150+ in medium sized groups leaving to NW. Quiet by 9am. (12 ringed)

Fieldfare - 20+ in with Redwing.

Song Thrush - 2 in with Redwings.

Chaffinch - 30+ in 1-2`s S.

Siskin - 5. 1 group S.

M Pipit - 30+ S in 1-2`s S.  Still decent numbers for so late in season.

Present - Goldfinch 5 (1 ringed), Greenfinch 5, 2-3 Blue and Great Tits.

Groups coming every 5-10 mins, high just under cloudbase, from Waggoners direction and heading South over back pond and Res. Also numerous M Pipit, Chaffinch and Greenfinch moving.

Fri 26th Oct 2012.  9.15- 11am.

Calm - 10 N NE. Sunny and clear.

Another excellent Thrush movement day but not here. Just a steady trickle of big flocks of Fieldfare with fewer Redwing parties joining in. 1000`s of Fieldfare going East - West over South Rossendale and Bryan Yorke doing very well in N Lancs with 6000+ today.  All my sightings going in a direction not really seen up here before SE-NW, high and all following the exact same flight path. Must have been a wind direction thing. But Greenfinch and M Pipit still all going South! One strange calling Thrush in with a small party of Redwing needs more investigation. Strange calling bird was Redwing sized but give very strange calls sounding almost like a "Skylark"!! but wasn`t..

Fieldfare - 400+ Decent big flocks but not that regular. SE-NW.

Redwing - 200+ small parties. 10-20`s. same direction.

M Pipit - 50+ still good numbers, all South.

Greenfinch - 20+ South.

Chaffinch - 20+ 1-2`s South.

Cormorant - 3 singles N.

Present - Sparrowhawk 2, Blackbird 4.
