a few notable sightings from today

  • little grebe - 1 on Holmes Terrace lodge
  • mallard - females with 1 - 5 young at various stages of development at Rawtenstall (3 broods), Ewood Bridge and alderbottom.
  • goosander - female on the stream near Edenwood Lodge
  • sparrowhawk - 1 in Staghills woods
  • common buzzard - 1 at irwell vale
  • coot - 3 at Holmes Terrace Lodge
  • moorhen - 1 at Holmes Terrace Lodge and 1pr witgh 2 juvs at Edenwood Lodge
  • curlew - heard near Fletcher Bank Quarry
  • great spotted woodpeckler - 2 drumming close together in Staghills Woods
  • sand martin - 6 at Strongstry and 20 in Fletcher Bank Quarry
  • dipper - 1 at Mill End, 1 on the river at Staghills Woods, 1pr with at least 2fledged juvs at Ewood Bridge and 1 at Strongstry
  • nuthatch - 1 taking food to nest site at Trickett's Memorial (only about 200 yards from my feeders but it still won't fly across the road) and 1 calling in Lea Bank Wood
  • Wheatear - 1pr in Fletcher Bank Quarry
  • mistle thrush - 3 fledged juvs in Staghills Woods
  • whitethroat - singing males at Townsendfold, Hollins Lane Edenfield and Twine valley
  • lesser redpoll - 4 birds in Trickett's Memorial, 1 of which is probably the bird I have seen on our feeders in the last couple of days
  • goldfinch - 1pr with at least 2 fledged juvs on Hollins Lane Edenfield
