I seem to have 3 grey squirrels in my garden. They eat most things I put out but they are all picking up the peanuts and monkey nuts and burying them all over the lawn. I'm assuming they will come back for them (they are even burying nuts in plant pots!) but what I'd like to know is: when will they dig them up? In the winter? Before then? And how do they know where to dig and how not to dig up each others?
Hope this makes sense. They fascinate me - they even pull leaves over the holes and pat them down diligently!
I have a feeding station for birds which I record on a regular basis, I agree with you it is a fascinating subject, I have tried to work out if they find what they bury but this is almost impossible on such a small scale.
If you Google the subject there has been some extensive research carried out which makes interesting reading.
