hawfinches!!!! 20/10/13

2 hawfinches were on the hillside at Warth around midday in the grounds of Holly Farm.  The 2 birds flew into a bush and then 1 sat at the top of a hawthorn before these 2 birds and around 8 - 10 other unidenified finches flew away, although they didn't appear to fly too far.  Sadly neither I, Dave Nuttall, Ian Brady, John Hallsworth or Peter Fyldes could relocate them.  Also present in the Warth area today were the following

  • 1 cormorant over to west
  • 12 meadow pipit
  • 2 dippers on the river
  • 1 jay
  • minimum of 120 fieldfare
  • minimum of 60 redwing
  • 1 mistle thrush
  • 2 goldcrest
  • linnet heard
  • siskin heard calling twice
  • 5 redpoll
  • 3 bullfinch

Also noted today

  • nuthatch seen storing food in an ash tree in Trickett's Memorial
  • family of goldcrest in Trickett's Memorial
  • 80 fieldfare flew towards Lench @ 08:30
  • charm of 60 goldfinch flying from Gaghills towards BRGS

cheers Kevin

Hi

I had a dream about Hawfinches in Rossendale last night although I dreamt I saw them at Holden Wood. I have yet to see a Hawfinch.
