It was a cool, crisp day but dry day and 2 teams (1x2 & 1x3) took place in this year's bird race with Team "2" recording 59 species and Team "3" recording 62 species. The combined total was a new winter record of 68 species which smashed the previous highest count of 65 species set in 2012.

 

There were 3 species recorded today that had never been recorded on a Winter Bird Race before and these were:

Jack Snipe, (Harden Moor)

Green Sandpiper, (E.B.S.W)

Barn Owl, (Cheesden Bar)

There were several other good sightings including:

G.C.Grebe, 2 on Calf Hey Res,

Mute Swan, on Wall Bank Lodge,

Teal, c30 on Calf Hey & 3 on Clowbridge Res,

Tufted Duck, several on Cowm Res,

Goldeneye, females on Clowbridge (2) & Spring Mill Res,

Buzzard, 1 at Calf Hey,

Lapwing, c18 at Holden Wood & a flock of c100 south down the Limy Valley,

Snipe, 5 at Holden Wood & 4 on Harden Moor,

Woodcock, 1 at Clowbridge,

G.B.B.Gull, c30 through south and c20 coming into roost at A.M.R

Kingfisher, At Irwell Vale,

Nuthatch, c6 in lower Irwell Valley,

Treecreeper, 1 at Strongstry & 2 at Calf Hey,

Raven, 1 at Alderbottom,

Brambling, at a Gaghills feeder!

 

Notable absences were Siskin & Redpoll
