Only thing I can add is never seen one of those before - not a Black Honey Bee is it but they are found in France?

Hi Russell

This is a hoverfly (latin name volucella pellucens), which according to Collins British Insects is seen from May to September mainly in wooded areas where it is very fond of bramble flowers.  The larvae live as scavengers in wasps' nests.  It does appear to be quite common in Rossendale from my own observations

cheers Kevin
