Old Tawny Owl...

Just got an interesting ringing recovery of a Tawny Owl i ringed many moons ago...

1 ringed as a juv in a nest box at Staghills, Newchurch on the 15th May 1992 !!

Found, unfortunately dead, down a chimney in Rawtenstall on the 15th April 2014...

A new BTO longevity record for Tawny Owl of 21yrs and 11 months... Also moved a massive 3km in that time.

Craig.

Hi Craig

What a discovery and just 1 month off being 22. Did it celebrate it's 18th with a pub crawl? At least it puts Rossendale on the map. Makes you wonder could it have moved around at all?

Hi Craig

My wife is a member of wild about Britain and read about this Owl and I did wonder if it could have been one of your "offspring". Quite a feat all round with the likelihood and age.

Are they quite sedentary in general do you know?

What a way to go 'falling down a chimney' most of us will end up 'going up a chimney'.!

Down Chimneys does seem to be a common occurrence with Tawny Owls and Jackdaws!!

Also they do seem to be very sedentary going off numerous other recoveries, but they obviously do move around aswell with previous recoveries of local ringed birds from Cheshire, West Yorkshire and West Lancs..

Craig.
